Hayling Golf Club play the ‘Spoons’ competition for the RNLI.

Hayling Golf Club members took part in an 18 hole Stableford Competition in July, and Club Captain Jamie Leggett wanted to ensure this year that the entry fees went to the local RNLI Lifeboat Station.

This annual event has been taking place for at least 40 years and originally the winning team of two players were presented with RNLI spoons. These spoons are no longer produced but the event continues and this year the winners were presented with RNLI mugs. As usual,  there were over 140 entrants playing in pairs in a 4 Ball Competition. Each player scores points for each hole depending on the number of shots taken and their starting handicap, and the team with the largest total score wins the event. This year the winners were Neil Fitch and Vice Admiral John Hardy with Michael Butcher and Bill Wallage coming second.  Presenting a cheque (pictured) for £438 to Lifeboat Station Manager Jonathan Bradbury, Club Captain Jamie Leggett said ‘It’s fantastic that this donation can support our local RNLI Station who do a wonderful job here around our coastline.’  Jonathan said ‘Many thanks to all who took part in raising this donation whilst having fun on the golfcourse. It will help us continue to save lives around Hayling, and we look forward to a continuing close relationship with the Golf Club.’
