On Saturday 11 October 362 kitesurfers’ set out to sail a measured mile in aid of three charities, the RNLI, Virgin Unite and Snow-Camp.

They were trying to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Parade of kitesurfers’ ever assembled but although 362 took to the water only 344 managed the mile, so the record of 352 still stands. They had to wait for a fair wind as the day started with grey skies and rain and little/no wind, but after a few hours the wind picked up and the sun shone and off they went making it a fantastic day for all. Dan Charlish, Director of Snow-Camp and the Kitesurfing Armada said ‘ It’s been a phenomenal response from the kitesurfing community. Although we had enough kitesurfers on the water, due to disqualifications the offical result was 344 which is a fantastic result nonetheless.’

Notable amongst the armada were Olympic Windsurfer Nick Dempsey, 11 year old Adam Farrington, the youngest participant and 73 year old Judy Tonkinson (pictured). Judy started kiting 13 years ago and taught herself. She said ‘I love the RNLI and hope I will never need to be rescued by them. They make me feel very secure in joining an event like this, as should I need them I know they have incredible expertise and skill. I’m here for the charities, that’s what the Armada is all about. Having fun and beating the youngsters is just an added bonus!’

So thanks to Judy and all who took part, and to Dan Charlish the organiser of a very well run event. We look forward to the sponsorship rolling in.
