Moths in trouble

Boats launched : Atlantic 85 and D-Class

Date : Monday 14 July

Launched at : 14:50

Returned at : 15:30

Weather : Fine but a SW F5 wind

A number of Moth Class dinghies were practising for the national championships and capsized in Hayling Bay. Frank Dunster on Hayling Rescue became concerned about several in difficulties in the challenging wind over tide conditions, and contacted Solent Coastguard. The Atlantic 85 and then the D-Class lifeboats were launched and went to the areas South of the Bar and into Hayling Bay. Hayling Rescue had recovered two boats and a HISC safety boat another, but uncertainty about others remained. Shortly afterwards however HISC informed the Coastguard that all were accounted for and the lifeboats could return to the station. The Atlantic went to a HISC safety boat that it had seen whilst searching for dinghies and which had anchored because of engine problems. The lifeboat helmsman managed to start the engine and the Atlantic 85 protected them from wave action as they re-entered the harbour.
