Open Day  - Sunday  20th June

About 300 people visited the lifeboat station during the day and watched launch and recovery demonstrations and short displays by the lifeboats including a man overboard exercise using "Fred" the dummy. There were children's activities, RNLI souvenir sales and Chichester Harbour Conservancy had a display where a representative from the harbour office was please to tell visitors about all the activities organised by CHC. Visitors were able to look around the Operations Room of the lifeboat station and the museum which displayed the history of the RNLI on Hayling Island.

During the last demonstration of the day the lifeboats had to disappear quickly to help a man who had fallen out of his dinghy. Fortunately he managed to get to the shore before the lifeboats reached him but on their way back to the station they were tasked off to the north end of the island to assist the Coastguard’s helicopter “India Juliett” to search for a possible person in the water after a dinghy had been found on the shore. After a comprehensive search, when no one was found, the lifeboats returned to the station making 32 call-outs to date.

Man over board exercise - the lifeboat crew on the D Class lifeboat put the dummy in the water and the crew in the Atlantic 75 B Class lifeboat picked the dummy out of the water. The dummy is the same weight as an average man.
