RNLI welcomes Russian Recruits

A group of 8 children from Chernobyl were given the opportunity to try on the wet weather gear when they visited the RNLI Hayling Island Lifeboat Station on Wednesday 31st March after an early supper at Hayling Island Sailing Club. They then watched the launch of the Atlantic 75 lifeboat going out on a routine evening training exercise.

The visit to the lifeboat station has become an annual event for the children who live for four weeks in the Petersfield area with local families. During their stay they have a full programme of activities and they are encouraged to eat healthily with lots of fresh fruit, milk and vegetables to boost their immune system. The children come from an area in Russia which still remains heavily contaminated from the nuclear fall after the explosion at Chernobyl on 26th April 1986.

[Thanks to Andy Ferguson for the picture]
The children’s visit to the UK is funded by the charity “Chernobyl Children Life Line”. This is a national charity, founded in 1991, which helps 3,000 children each year.

At the Hayling Island Lifeboat Station Christmas Party on 17th December, RNLI crew jumpers were presented to John Trapmore (left) and Kieran Kinsella (right) who have both successfully completed a year of training to become voluntary lifeboat crew. Kieran and John joined the crew as trainees in September 2002. During their first year they have been attending training sessions on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings learning about navigation, first aid, boat handling and the launch and recovery of the lifeboats. Their training was shore based for the first three months and as the station operates a three watch system, during the rest of their year of training they spent three month periods working with the senior helms and boat crew of each watch. This has been a particularly busy year for Hayling Lifeboat Station so Kieran and John have already been involved in a number of rescues.
