“Chernobyl
Children Life Line”. |
| |
|
Sixteen
Russian children staying with families in
the Petersfield area organised through the
“Chernobyl
Children Life Line” charity, visited
the lifeboat station on Wednesday
30th March and watched the lifeboats
launched on exercise. Earlier they
had enjoyed supper at Hayling Island
Sailing Club. |
| |
|
This is the
twelfth year running that a group of
children from Chernobyl has visited
Hayling Island. During their
four week stay in the UK the
children have a full programme of
activities. They are encouraged to
eat healthily with lots of fresh
fruit, milk and vegetables to boost
their immune system. The children
come from an area in Russia which
still remains heavily contaminated
from the nuclear fall-out after the
explosion at Chernobyl on 26th
April 1986. |

Vandals smash their
way into Hayling Island Lifeboat Station
|
| |
|
Lifeboat
crew on Hayling Island were shocked
to find that their lifeboat station
had been broken into on Thursday
morning 10 March. The cost of
replacing the equipment and
repairing the damage will be around
£5,000. |
| |
|
Thieves
smashed a ground-floor window into
the crew room only to find bars
prevented entry. They then forced
their way through a small window in
the main door. |
| |
|
Handheld
VHF radios were taken and collecting
boxes in the station's museum were
smashed and the contents taken.
Fortunately these are emptied
regularly so only small amounts of
cash were taken, but most of the
money taken would have been from
young children who regularly put
their pennies in the collecting
boxes when they visit the lifeboat
station. |
| |
|
 |
|
Picture
of type or radios stolen |
|
|
|
One crew member
said, "Lives are put at risk when vital
equipment is stolen. We depend on the
hand-held radios to talk directly to other
boats when out on call-outs. |
|
|
|
"The RNLI also relies on voluntary
contributions and fundraisers around the
country work hard to raise money to buy
equipment for the lifeboats and this is
particularly upsetting for a charity. The
lifeboat station is like a second home to us
and we take such an incident very
personally". |
|
|
|
Many of the
lifeboat crew had been at the station on
Wednesday evening when both lifeboats were
launched as part of a routine training
exercise. The station was locked up later
that night. Thankfully the lifeboats were
left undamaged but all the voluntary
lifeboat crew were upset that a vital-life
saving service should be targeted in this
way. |
|
|
|
Measures have now been taken
to make sure that the lifeboat station is
even more secure.
Anyone who has any information about this
incident should contact the local police on
Tel: 0845 0454545 |

"Little
Cockles" visit station |
 |
|
|
Thirty small children
and toddlers visited Hayling Island
lifeboat station with their parents and watched one of
the trainee voluntary lifeboat crew
demonstrating how to put on the
protective clothing and safety gear
she is required to wear in the
lifeboats. |
|
The young visitors were
taking part in the “Little Cockles”
walk along the shoreline on Wednesday
16th February, which was
organised by Chichester Harbour
Conservancy. They arrived at the
lifeboat station with their buckets
full of shells and pebbles collected
from the beach and after looking
around the operations room, they all
enjoyed the opportunity to sit in the
D Class lifeboat. |

Wargave
RNLI Fundraising Branch |
| |
|
The RNLI relies on
voluntary donations in order to run
and maintain a vital 24/7 life
saving service at sea. There are
hundreds of RNLI fundraising
branches who work hard to raise
funds for the RNLI even though many
of them may be many miles from the
sea. One such branch is at Wargrave
in Berkshire where a dedicated group
of fundraisers ran tombola stalls
specifically to raise money to buy
Hayling Island Lifeboat Station a
Navtex [an electronic navigation and
weather reporting system]. On Sunday
13th February the
Wargrave RNLI Fundraising committee
formally handed over the equipment
to the lifeboat crew at Hayling
Island. |
