Chernobyl Children

Twenty years after the Chernobyl disaster in the former USSR, now Ukraine, when a nuclear power plant exploded, the people in the area are still suffering the affects of the nuclear fall-out.  The UK funded charity “Chernobyl Children Life Line”, which was established in 1991, helps 3,000 children each year who have health problems as a result of living in an area heavily contaminated by radiation. Groups of children visit the UK for a month when the fresh air and a healthy diet helps to boost their immune system.

On Wednesday 19th April 12 Chernobyl children, who were staying for a month with families in the Petersfield area, visited the Hayling Island Lifeboat Station and tried on the lifejackets and looked over the lifeboats. Earlier in the afternoon they had been entertained at Hayling Island Sailing Club.  This was thirteenth time that groups of Chernobyl children had visited the lifeboat station.

Half term activity at the Lifeboat Station

The “Little Cockles” visited the lifeboat station on 15th February and despite a night of torrential rain and strong winds over 115 people met at the lifeboat station, 65 of these being children of 5 years or under.

The “Little Cockles” walk was organised by Chichester Harbour Conservancy (www.conservancy.co.uk) and is a fun walk for families with pre-school aged children along the shoreline around the eastern corner of Hayling Island to the lifeboat station. During the walk the children were encouraged to collect any items of interest which they carried in their buckets.

The walkers were given a short talk about the RNLI  followed by a demonstration by one of the voluntary lifeboat crew on how to wear the full crew clothing and equipment.  The children also looked at the lifeboats and the launching tractors. At the end of their visit they were given packs to take home full of information about the RNLI and Storm Force (the RNLI’s membership for children).

Andrew runs the New York Marathon for the RNLI

THE RNLI is very grateful to Hayling Islander, Andrew Jameson, who ran the New York Marathon on 6th November 2005 to raise money for the Hayling Island Lifeboat Station. When Andrew started collecting sponsorship he hoped to raise enough money to go towards kitting out a new crew member (£1,200). Andrew far exceeded his target and raised £2,715, which is enough to pay for the kit and cover the cost of training a new lifeboat crew member. Andrew’s official time for the marathon was 3:55:29 placing him 7,355th out of 38,000 entrants.

In thanking Andrew for his very generous and hard earned donation, Nigel Roper, Hayling Island Lifeboat Manager, presented him with an RNLI Plaque and a framed picture of the lifeboat station and the lifeboats with details of his achievement.

Sailor runs for the Lifeboat Station

A member of Hayling Island Sailing Club, Andrew Jameson, will be running the New York marathon on 6th November to raise money for the Hayling Island RNLI station. When Andrew recently visited the station to meet the voluntary lifeboat crew he said , "I am currently training hard in order to run the New York Marathon. For those of you that know me well, I am no "Paula Radcliffe" so it is certainly a challenge.  I am running the marathon with a friend who I have sailed against for many years. As a result we felt it would be very appropriate to raise funds for our local RNLI lifeboat stations being Hayling and Bembridge.  The money I raise will go towards the costs of kiting out a member of the Hayling Lifeboat crew (cost £1,200) and hopefully providing them with some of the necessary training. Fortunately I have not had to use their services but I know a number of people who have and they provide an invaluable reassurance to anyone going afloat. "Anyone wishing to sponsor Andrew can contact him via:  webmaster@haylinglifeboats.org.uk
