The RNLI says thanks to Ian |
|
Ian Harris clocked up nearly 17
years of voluntary service for
the RNLI on Hayling Island until
his recent retirement as Senior
Helm of White Watch. Ian joined
the lifeboat crew in 1991 when
he started work as a PE and
mathematics teacher at the
Hayling School . He had
previously been teaching in
Essex and working as an
instructor at a sailing centre.
He qualified as a helm in 1995.
During his service with the RNLI
Ian received three “Letters of
Thanks” from the RNLI Director
of Operations and in 2001 he
received a “Letter of
Appreciation” signed by the RNLI
Chief Executive for his part
during a difficult night
service. The following year he
was appointed Senior Helm of
White Watch. |
|
|
On Saturday 13th September,
during his retirement party organised
and funded by the crew, which was also
attended by RNLI crew from other local
stations and HM Coastguards from
Hayling, Ian was presented with gifts
from the crew and a “Letter of Thanks”
from Andrew Freemantle, Chief
Executive of the RNLI. Ian, who is now
a lecturer at Southampton University,
said, “I am looking forward to
spending more time with my wife Karyn
and our two daughters, Abigail and
Louise and I would like to thank them
for their support over all this time
and tolerance of the disturbed nights
when I responded to my call-out
pager.” [Posted

"Laura Allen said, "I had always wanted
to run the London Marathon and finally got
my chance this year when I got my place to
run for the RNLI. I began my training in
November but iIhad been running for years at
around the 8-10 mile distance so it wasn't
like starting from scratch. However it was
going to be a big jump going from 10 to 26
miles so I planned all my training and
learnt lots about marathon running - it was
like doing a degree, there was so much
information!! I also had the task of
raising the £2100 for the RNLI and I wanted
the money to go to my local station on
Hayling so I enlisted the help of Siri who
was fantastic and I went on to raise the
money by holding the "Laura's Leap Year
Lifeboat Party" at HISC in February as well
as sponsorship, collecting outside
Somerfield on Hayling and a sweepstake of my
Marathon time at work. The marathon
training continued through all this and I
was running over 40 miles a week! I
suffered some knee problems along the way
but took to the distance well, completing
two 22 mile runs in my training. When the
day finally arrived I was ready to go and
ran a fantastic race despite the rain
finishing in 3 hours and 35 minutes which i
was absolutely thrilled with, especially as
I'd planned to come in just under 4! Not
bad for my first marathon!!

The East Hayling Light Railway
supports the RNLI |
|
The
EHLR had a charity
event on Tuesday 19th February and
donated all their fares for
the day to the Hayling Island
Lifeboat Station.
Lifeboat crew
spent spent the day travelling
on the train and talking to
passengers and handing out
“goody bags” and flags to the
children. To add excitement to
the day, the lifeboat crew had
to dash from one station to
another during the afternoon
when they responded to their
call-out pagers to launch the
lifeboat to a RIB in
difficulty in Hayling Bay. At
the end of the day,
Ian Edwards, Chairman of the
EHLR Society, presented Siri
Young, Chair of the Hayling
RNLI Fundraising Committee,
with £333.50. |
