New look lifeboat station now finished

 
The building project to extend the lifeboat station has now finished and on Friday 23rd November the keys were formally handed over to Nigel Roper, Lifeboat Operations Manager, by Peter Rawlins, Site Agent from Dean & Dyball, the builders. The lifeboats, tractors and equipment will move in at the beginning of December.

Remembrance Day Parade

THE RNLI crew took part in the Hayling Island Remembrance Day Parade.


ASDA Pharmacy helps the lifeboat crew face a harsh winter.
THE RNLI crew on Hayling Island received a surprise donation from the new ASDA pharmacy at Waterloville of a supply of skin care products designed to protect and replenish their skin as they face a winter of launches in gales and other inclement weather conditions.

Mayor of Havant's Civic Day

On Friday 14th September the Mayor and Mayoress of Havant visit the lifeboat station with a group of the Mayor's guests as part of a tour of the Borough. During the visit the Mayor presented the lifeboat station with a civic plaque which was accepted by Nigel Roper, Lifeboat Operations Manager.

The Worshipful the Mayor & Mayoress of Havant, Councillor Vic Pierce Jones and Mrs Margaret Jones visited the Lifeboat Station on Wednesday 29th August and watched the lifeboats demonstrate their manoeuvrability. The Mayor has chosen the Hayling Island Lifeboat Station as one of the three local charities he has decided to support during his year in Office. The other charities are Home-Start Havant (Registered Charity Number 1107037) and Havant Borough Talking News (Registered Charity No. 1025556). Lifeboats on Display

THE RNLI Hayling Island lifeboats were displayed on the beach in front of the lifeboat station on Sunday 26th August during an event organised by the local voluntary lifeboat crew to show islanders and visitors how the search and rescue services on Hayling operate.

Well done to Sam

Congratulations to Sam from Emsworth who raised around £115 for the RNLI by running in the Moor Valley 5k event.. Sam visited the Lifeboat Station on 1st July to bring along some more of his sponsorship money.
 
 


Andy Ferguson qualifies as a D Class Helm

Andy Ferguson, who joined the lifeboat crew in 2003 has been passed out by the RNLI Inspectors as a D Class Helm. Andy , who lives near the Lifeboat Station, is an Aeronautical Engineer and works in Portsmouth.
 
 


The Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2007/2008

The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Victor Pierce-Jones, has chosen the Hayling Island Lifeboat Station as one of the three local charities he has decided o support during his year in Office. The other charities are Home-Start Havant (Registered Charity Number 1107037) and Havant Borough Talking News (Registered Charity No. 1025556).

Farnborough Masonic Club

Geoff & Beryl Andrews recently made a flying visit to the Hayling Island to hand over another cheque to the station. The cheque for £1,100 was made up of three donations of £250 from the Farnborough Masonic Lodge, £250 from the Masonic Club and £600 as a personal donation from Geoff & Beryl. They recently retired from being the Stewards of the Farnborough Masonic Club and for a number of years they have been strong supporters of Hayling Island Lifeboat Station making regular visits to the station with cheques. Over the years they have donated around £9,500 to the Hayling Island Lifeboat Station.

Three friends paddle for the RNLI

Three friends from Sefton Park School, Stoke Poges, Bucks, paddled 5½ miles in kayaks and raised £812.16 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.  The three 14 year old boys, Kurt Bedford, Josh Parsons and Loren Robertson, had all chosen to make the RNLI the subject of their coursework for the Citizenship GCSE. Having found out more about the work of this life saving charity they then decided to raise funds for Hayling Island RNLI Station, Hampshire, as Kurt and his family are regular visitors to the island. A special farewell to Alan Crate

RNLI crew, past and present, from Hayling Island Lifeboat Station and representatives from HM Coastguards lined the road leading to the entrance leading to Porchester Crematorium on 25th April 2007 to pay their respects to a very special person who sadly died at Easter. Alan had been a member of the HM Coastguards for 19 years before he joined the RNLI shorecrew in 1999. [more details]

Congratulations to Simon Hornby

Congratulations to Simon who completed the London Marathon on 22nd April in 3:14:58 and has raised approx £1,000 for Hayling Lifeboat station. Simon, who finished 1,816th out of 35,000 runners, said, " I  decided to run the London Marathon to raise money for the RNLI.  My dad volunteers at the Hayling Island RNLI station and this has given me an insight into the sterling work that all RNLI crew achieve.  This is often in very difficult and challenging situations, risking their own lives to save others." Simon is a Surgeon Lieutenant with the Royal Navy currently working in a hospital in Chester.


Lifeboat Crew receive "Letters of Thanks"

The RNLI has sent “Letters of Thanks” to four voluntary lifeboat crew on Hayling Island for their part in a difficult and successful rescue last year. The Letters were presented to the lifeboat crew at a Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club during a Cheese & Wine Evening

Rod Till, received his RNLI jumper on 21st April 2007 at MRSC. Rod completed his year long training period last September but this was the first official opportunity to present him with the jumper.

Hugh Kennedy, a Council Member of the FCA Ltd, and his wife Penny visited the lifeboat station on Wednesday 11th April and presented Nigel Roper, Lifeboat Operations Manager with a cheque for £500.The money was raised by members of the FCA Ltd during a charity golfing day.

Lifeboat Station awarded Freedom of the Harbour

Nigel Roper, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Hayling RNLI Station received on behalf of all the station’s voluntary crew the Freedom of Chichester Harbour. The Lifeboat Station is only the second organisation to receive the Freedom of the Harbour. The award was presented by Cllr Ted Gale, Chairman of Chichester Harbour Conservancy.

Wye Valley School Visit

A group of pupils and a teacher from Wye Valley School recently visited the station and presented the RNLI with a cheque for £200 raised during the national SOS fundraising event. Pupils at the school, which is in Bourne End, paid to wear trainers for the day and bought special laces.


Fog Training

 
The lifeboat crew took part in a fog training exercise on Sunday 18th February. Paul (left) was under a blanket looking at the GPS and giving navigation instructions to Craig at the helm, who could only see the instruments but not ahead. Meanwhile, for safety reasons, Simon was keeping a very careful look out. This was one of the many training exercises the lifeboat crew undertake in preparation for all types of weather conditions. 


Chris Tarrant

 
The lifeboat crew were saddened to hear the news that Chris Tarrant, who had been part of the shore crew since 1993, died peacefully in St Wilfred's Hospice on Wednesday 31st January after a long illness.
 
Chris joined the lifeboat crew when he retired and was responsible for the fuel supply and management of the stocks for both the lifeboats and the tractors.
 
In recent weeks when Chris was too ill to visit the station he kept an eye on the lifeboats' activities by monitoring the website. His dry wit and good humour will be missed by all the crew. [full obituary]
 

 
Congratulations to Andy Peasley who  was passed out by the RNLI Inspectorate as a B Class Helmsman on 10th January 2007. Andy joined the lifeboat crew in September 2001 and qualified as a D Class Helmsman in December 2004.

 
Thanks to John Gallagher [right] who presented a cheque for £180 for the lifeboat station to Nigel Roper, Lifeboat Operations Manager, on Sunday 14th January 2007. The money was raised by the Victory Athletics Club during a recent charity run around Hayling Island.
