Solent coastguard requested the launch
of the lifeboat to rescue a young man
in a dismasted dinghy 1/2 mile off
shore near the entrance to Chichester
Harbour which was in very rough
conditions on Chichester Bar and
drifting out to sea with the tide.
When the lifeboat
reached the dinghy, , several attempts
were made to tow the damaged dinghy
without success due to the severe
weather conditions and the 3 to 4
metre high waves. The young man was
very reluctant to leave his dinghy but
eventually was persuaded to abandon
his boat and he was taken in the
lifeboat safely back to Hayling Island
Sailing Club. The lifeboat then
returned to the scene and after some
while found the dinghy drifting in the
rough conditions. One of the lifeboat
crew then managed to get onto the
dinghy and attached a line and it was
towed back to the sailing club.
