  For many of the rescues we are only able to give limited information to protect the confidentiality of the casualties.

In 2006 there were 93 requests for the Hayling Island lifeboats to be tasked which have resulted in 85 services afloat and 8 occasions when the crew assembled but the launches were cancelled as the incident  was resolved.

92/93 Sat 31st Dec Atlantic 75 & D Class 10.45 F6 Whilst on exercise, the lifeboats were tasked to assist a windsurfer who had been swept off his board by waves in the rough sea. The casualty was taken on board the Atlantic 75, B class lifeboat and taken back to the lifeboat station where he was treated for mild hypothermia. The D Class lifeboat was tasked to recover the board. The casualty had been windsurfing with a friend so the lifeboat crew then searched for the second windsurfer who was found safe and well. The lifeboats returned to station at 12.30.
90/91 Wed 22nd Nov Atlantic75 & D Class 20.15 F4 Whilst both lifeboats were out on a training exercise Solent Coastguard tasked the lifeboats to search for a possible vessel in distress following a report that a red distress flare had been seen near Chichester Marina. No persons were found to be in distress and the lifeboat returned to station at 20.54.
88/89 Mon 20th Nov Atlantic 75 & D Class 18.08 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboats after receiving a report that a red distress flare had been sited near Langstone Bridge. After an extensive search of the area no vessel in distress was found and the lifeboats returned to station.
87 Fri 17th Nov Atlantic 75 11.45 F7/8 Solent coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to rescue a young man in a dismasted dinghy 1/2 mile off shore near the entrance to Chichester Harbour which was in very rough conditions on Chichester Bar and drifting out to sea with the tide. When the lifeboat reached the dinghy, , several attempts were made to tow the damaged dinghy without success due to the severe weather conditions and the 3 to 4 metre high waves. The young man was very reluctant to leave his dinghy but eventually was persuaded to abandon his boat and he was taken in the lifeboat safely back to Hayling Island Sailing Club. The lifeboat then returned to the scene and after some while found the dinghy drifting in the rough conditions. One of the lifeboat crew then managed to get onto the dinghy and attached a line and it was towed back to the sailing club. The lifeboat returned to station at 13.30.
86 Sun 29th Oct Atlantic 75 15.45 F2 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat following the receipt of a report that a boat had been seen upside down off Bracklesham Bay. The lifeboat arrived on scene and found a large crate upside down. The crate was recovered to the shore before the lifeboat returned to station at 16.35.
84/85 Thurs 18th Oct Atlantic 75 & D Class 18.16 F6/7 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of both lifeboats when a report was received that a SOS light signal had been seen. Both lifeboats were launched to a small fishing boat, with one man on board. which had run aground in Chichester Harbour. The skipper of the boat was very cold and wet and  suffering from hypothermia. He was taken off his boat and taken back to the lifeboat station in the D Class lifeboat  where he received medical attention. The lifeboats then towed the boat into Sparkes Marina. The lifeboats returned to station at around 20.00.
83 Sun 24th Sept Atlantic 75 21.45 F3 The lifeboat was launched with salvage pump too oversee the re-floating of the yacht below. With the assistance of the Harbour Patrol boat the yacht was taken into Sparkes Marina where it was hoisted out of the water. The lifeboat returned to station at 23.12.
82 Sun 24th Sept D Class 17.49 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a yacht which had run aground at the entrance to Chichester Harbour. The yacht was damaged and was likely to fill with water when the tide came in. The Harbour patrol staff and the lifeboat crew filled the holes from the outside and it was agreed that the Atlantic 75 B Class lifeboat would be launched when the boat started to re-float to make sure it would not sink. The owner of the yacht insisted on staying on board throughout. The lifeboat returned to station.
81 Fri 22nd Sept Atlantic 75 13.30 F5/6 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a motor vessel with 3 POB lost in the area of Chichester Bar.   The lifeboat  soon located the vessel south east of Chichester Bar.   A lifeboat crew member was put onboard and took the helm of the vessel and brought it into Chichester Harbour escorted by the lifeboat.   The vessel was taken to Sparks Yacht Harbour.  The lifeboat then returned to station at 14.01.
80 Thurs 21st Sept Atlantic 75 approx 19.00 F6/7 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a sailing dinghy  with 2 teenagers on board that was in difficulty near the entrance to Chichester Harbour. [details to follow]
78/79 Wed 6th Sept Atlantic 75 & D Class 18.07 F3 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboats to an 8m yacht with one man on board which had run aground on the West Pole Sands. The skipper of the yacht was quite concerned about his predicament and had radioed a "Pan Pan" call on his VHF radio. A lifeboat crew member was put aboard the yacht and the vessel was towed into Chichester Harbour by the Atlantic 75 and then the skipper took the yacht back to his mooring escorted by the D Class lifeboat.
77 Mon 4th Sept Atlantic 75 16.53 F4/5 The lifeboat was launched to assist a speedboat 6 miles off shore with 3 adults on board. One person was in the water and the speedboat had run out of fuel due to a split fuel line. Two vessels nearby were first on scene and the 3 persons were taken on board these vessels. When the lifeboat arrived the lifeboat crew assessed that the man who had been in the water had hypothermia and he was air lifted by the Coastguard helicopter and taken to hospital. The other two men were taken on board the lifeboat and the lifeboat then towed the speedboat back into Chichester Harbour with a lifeboat crew member on board. The lifeboat returned to station at 18.16 [details to follow]
76 Sat 2nd Sept Atlantic 75 crew assembled  18.14 F8 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to assist a RIB that had capsized near the entrance to Chichester Harbour in very rough conditions. The launch was cancelled when it was reported that the two persons on the RIB were safely ashore.
74/75 Fri 1st Sep Atlantic 75 D Class placed on immediate readiness 21.04 F4 Solent Coastguard requested assistance for a woman stuck in the mud near the Tarquin Marina, Emsworth, and 2 persons aground in a RIB.  The Atlantic was launched and the D Class placed on immediate readiness.  Coastguard Rescue Helecopter IJ was also tasked and located the woman in the mud whilst the lifeboat stood nearby the stranded RIB and dispatched 2 crew members to ascertain their wellbeing.  One woman was airlifted from the mud and the other two people in the RIB were also airlifted to safety.  The lifeboat then towed the RIB off the mud and returned it to Sparkes Marina. The Lifeboat then returned to station at 22.45.
73 Mon 28th Aug Atlantic 75 02.11 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to evacuate a 15 year old boy suffering from a severe asthma attack from a yacht that was moored on a buoy in Mill Rythe Creek. The lifeboat took the boy plus one adult and another boy back to the lifeboat station where the casualty was transferred to an awaiting ambulance. The lifeboat returned to station at 02.40.
71/72 Sun 27th Aug Atlantic 75 & D Class 13.20 F4 The lifeboats were launched to assist a 34ft yacht with a rope around the propeller in position 2.3km west of West Pole. The yacht was towed to Northney. The D Class lifeboat escorted the tow as the main entrance to Chichester Harbour was particularly busy. The lifeboats returned to station at 14.25.
70 Sat 26th Aug Atlantic 75 already afloat F3 Solent Coastguard requested the lifeboat to check on two people who were aboard a speed boat that had run aground on a sandbank and were waiting for the tide to come in.  The two people, who were by now cold and tired, were taken off their boat and taken back to the lifeboat station to warm up. The lifeboat crew waited for speed boat to re-float and it was taken back to Northney Marina by lifeboat crew, escorted by the lifeboat.  The lifeboat returned to station at 23.17
68/69 Sat 26th Aug Atlantic 75 & D Class 20.51 F3 The sighting of a red distress flare was reported to Solent Coastguard by several people. The lifeboats were launched to search areas of Chichester Harbour. When nothing was found Solent Coastguard called off the search. The Atlantic 75 returned to station at 21.24 and the D Class was tasked to another incident.
67 Mon 21st Aug Atlantic 75 Crew assembled at 17.14 F5 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to assist a kite surfer reported to be in difficulty 500m south of the Hayling beach. During the launch procedure Solent Coastguard reported that the casualty had been assisted ashore by a windsurfer and the lifeboat returned to station at 17.15.
66 Sun 20th Aug Atlantic 75 16.10 F5 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to 3 windsurfers who were seen to be in difficulty off Hayling Beach. Two of the windsurfers managed to reach the shore but the third person who was tired and struggling against the tide was taken aboard the lifeboat and returned safely to the beach. The lifeboat returned to station at 16.42
65 Sun 20th Aug Atlantic 75 14.00 F5 While undertaking the Open Day demonstration, the lifeboat was tasked to assist a 11m yacht aground on Pilsey Sands in Chichester Harbour. With the assistance of Hayling Rescue the yacht was towed into deeper water. The lifeboat returned to station at 14.32.
64 Sat 12th Aug D Class The lifeboat assisted 3 rafts in difficulties near Langstone.
63 Sat 12th Aug Atlantic 75 The lifeboat was tasked to a windsurf in difficulties in gusty conditions. The wind surfer was picked up by the lifeboat and returned to the shore.
61/62 Thurs 10th Aug Atlantic 75 & D Class c 19.20 The lifeboats were launched to search for a kite surfer who was in difficulty.  Details to follow
60 Thurs 3rd Aug Atlantic 75 19.35 F3 The lifeboat was launched to assist a sports boat with 4 young people on board with engine failure off Bracklesham Bay. The lifeboat towed the sports boat back to the slip way at Bracklesham. The lifeboat returned to station at 20.10.
59 Mon 31st July Atlantic 75 14.30 F6/7 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat following a report that a woman was possibly missing swimming off West Wittering Beach. The lifeboat and the Coastguard helicopter searched in the surfline off the shore. The woman was found ashore safe and well. The lifeboat returned to station at 15.28.
57/58 Fri 28th July Atlantic 75 & D Class Crew assembled 18.27 F3 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of both lifeboats to search for 2 children missing on Wittering Beach. The lifeboat crew assembled but fortunately the 2 children were found before it was necessary to launch the lifeboats.
52-56 Mon 24th July Atlantic 75 & D Class [4 incidents]

 

17.09 F2 Both lifeboats were launched to search for a special needs child who went missing on Hayling Beach. Shore crew were also tasked to search for the boy along the beach. The boy was eventually found ashore. However whilst on service and searching for the boy the lifeboat crew in the Atlantic 75 assisted a boy swimming who had cramp and he was taken to the shore and the D Class lifeboat crew attended to a child who had been stung by a weaver fish. Then when the Atlantic lifeboat was returning to the lifeboat station it was tasked to a Dory that had broken down near the entrance to Chichester Harbour. The Atlantic 75 lifeboat towed the Dory back to Bosham. The D Class lifeboat returned to station at 20.40 and the Atlantic 75 returned to station at 20.48.
51 Sun 23rd July Atlantic 75 11.26 F3

The Atlantic 75  had just launched  on exercise when it was observed from the Station, crew waving from a speedboat broken down in the approaches into Chichester Harbour. The lifeboat proceeded to investigate. Once alongside, it was established that both crew on board the speedboat were OK but their inboard petrol engine had broken down and their 3.5hp aux was also showing an intermittent fault. The lifeboat towed the craft to Northney Marina.

49/50 Thurs 20th July Atlantic 75 & D Class Crew assembled 18.29

Solent Coastguard requested assistance with a search for a missing child from West Wittering beach West Sussex. The child was last seen on a small surf board in the water. Both  the Atlantic 75 and the "D" class lifeboats were tasked to launch, however two minutes after the pagers went off the launch was cancelled by Solent Coastguard. Enough crew to man both boats did respond and mustered at the station.

48 Wed 19th July Atlantic 75 19.47 F5 The lifeboat was launched to assist a 7m sport boat with 4 adults on board that had broken down off Hayling Beach. The lifeboat towed the craft into Sparkes Marina. The lifeboat returned to station at 21.45
47 Sun 16th July D Class 14.53 F1 The lifeboat was launched to a jetski that was drifting in Chichester Harbour with 2 adults on board. The jetski had turned over and failed to restart. The two men were taken on board the lifeboat and the jetski was towed back to the beach. The lifeboat returned to station at 15.20.
45/46 Sat 15th July Atlantic 75 & D Class 15.23 F3/4 Both lifeboat were launched when it was reported that a 9 year old girl who had last been seen on a lilo off West Wittering Beach was missing. An extensive search was carried out on land and sea which also involved the Coastguard helicopter, Coastguard teams, Police and a beach rescue team. When the girl was found safely ashore the search was called off and the lifeboat returned to station at 18.25.
44 Fri 14th July D Class 22.58 F5/6 The lifeboat responded to a "Pan Pan" emergency call from a yacht with two adults onboard  0.5 miles south of the lifeboat station which was nearly aground and bouncing on the sea bed in the swell at the entrance to Chichester Harbour. A lifeboat crew member was put aboard the yacht before it was towed by the lifeboat into deeper water and back to Chichester Marina. The lifeboat returned to station at 23.58.
43 Fri 14th July Atlantic 75 22.12 F5/6 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a yacht sending out a Mayday distress call. The yacht with 2 adults on board had run aground on the East Winner Bank near the entrance to Langstone Harbour and it was pitching in the swell. Selsey all weather RNLI lifeboat was also launched to be on standby but later not required. A lifeboat crew member was put on board the yacht and established that there was a hole in the hull just above the waterline adjacent to the rudder. A salvage pump was used to pump out the water and the yacht was towed by the lifeboat  into deeper water and back to Northney Marina. The lifeboat returned to station at 01.00.
41/42 Fri 14th July Atlantic 75 & D Class 18.12 F5/6 Both lifeboats were launched when a small dinghy was spotted in the water with possibly two people alongside in the water about 1.5 miles off shore. When the lifeboats arrived on scene the lifeboat crew found a 2m inflatable dinghy with paddles and two body surf boards but there was no sign of persons in the water. An extensive search was carried out which involved the Coastguard helicopter and on shore coastguard teams. No persons were found in the water and as no persons had been reported missing the dinghy was returned to the shore and the lifeboats returned to station at 19.30.
39/40 Wed 12th July Atlantic 75 & D Class 23.29 F2 The lifeboats were launched to an incident in the Bosham Channel where it was reported that 4 youths were possible stuck in the mud on a flooding tide. Police and Coastguards were on scene. The lifeboats searched along the shoreline. When the 4 youths were found ashore the lifeboats were stood down and returned to station at 00.25.
37/38 Wed 12th July Atlantic 75 & D Class 20.23 F2

Whilst on exercise in Hayling Bay, the coastguard contacted the lifeboats and requested an immediate response to the sighting of a capsized kayak with the occupant in the water off Hayling Beach.  He had been unable to return to his craft and been in the water for some time. At the same time the first informant was apparently trying to swim out to his aid. The Atlantic 75 lifeboat went alongside, pulling the man from the canoe from the water and at the same time the lifeboat crew in the D Class lifeboat spotted the head of the swimmer some distance away and pulled him from the water.  The two men and the canoe were taken to the beach at the Coastguard Station and the Hayling Coastguards where it was established that no medical assistance was needed. The lifeboats returned to station at 21.05.

36 Tue 20th June Atlantic 75 10.38 F4/5

Solent Coastguard received a report that there was a  partially submerged dinghy approx 1 mile off Hayling Beach.   The lifeboat began a box search to locate the craft and or search for survivors but nothing was found.  Solent Coastguard called off the search after almost an hour of searching and the lifeboat returned to station at 11.55.

35 Fri 16th June Atlantic 75 20.52 F3 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a 34ft yacht with 3 adults on board with a fouled propeller  about 5nm SSW of the lifeboat station. When the lifeboat reached the yacht a lifeboat crew member was put aboard and established that no repair was possible at the scene so the yacht was towed into Chichester Harbour by the lifeboat. The lifeboat returned to station at 23.00.
34 Wed 14th June Atlantic 75 19.15 F3 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat after receiving a report that a man was being cut off by the rising tide at Eaststoke Beach near the entrance to Chichester Harbour. The lifeboat made haste to the location .On arrival the lifeboat crew were able to establish that the man was a local fisherman familiar with the area and not in danger. The lifeboat crew stood by whilst the Coastguard mobile team checked with the first informant that this sighting was one and the same. The lifeboat then returned to station at 20.30 after checking a sighting of a possible wreck in Chichester Harbour that was exposed during a particularly low tide.
33 Fri 9th June D Class 16.28 F6 The lifeboat was launched to assist 2 adults in a Laser dinghy that had got into difficulties in Chichester Harbour. The lifeboat returned to station at 16.45.
31/32 Sat 3rd June Atlantic 75 & D Class 21.35 F3 Solent Coastguard had received reports of three children in a small inflatable being swept out to sea from Chichester Harbour. Both lifeboats were launched and searched the area. Selsey RNLI lifeboat, which was in the area, also joined in the search.  A thorough parallel search pattern was set up and the whole area searched up to five miles seaward. With nothing found, Selsey LB was stood down and they returned to Station. However, whilst further enquiries were made ashore, both the Hayling Lifeboats were requested to return to station but both lifeboats and crews kept at immediate readiness. The children were eventually located ashore and crews stood down at 23.48hrs.
