93 Sat 25th Dec Atlantic 75 18.26 F4 Solent Coastguard received a number of telephone calls informing them of red flares in the Itchenor Reach. The Atlantic 75 lifeboat was launched and searched the Chichester Channel, Itchenor Reach and Bosham Reach before being stood down by Solent Coastguard as nothing untoward was found. The lifeboat returned to station at 19.46.
92 Wed 22nd Dec Atlantic 75  02.32 F4/5

The Atlantic 75 lifeboat “Betty Battle” was launched to an 18ft speedboat with one man on board with engine trouble.  The skipper had been fishing and was returning to Chichester Harbour when his gear box failed. He tried to use his auxiliary engine but ran out of fuel. The speed boat was anchored just outside the entrance to Chichester Harbour. One of the lifeboat crew went on to the speedboat to secure a tow line and it was towed into Chichester Harbour. The skipper of the speedboat however sustained a back injury trying to lift his anchor and required medical assistance. The lifeboat took the speedboat to the pontoon at Hayling Island Sailing Club to meet the lifeboat shore crew, the Hayling Island First Responders and an ambulance where the lifeboat crew had to use a special stretcher to carefully move the casualty from the speedboat. Once the skipper of the speedboat was safe, the lifeboat towed the speedboat to Sparkes Marina and then returned to the lifeboat station at around 4.15 am.

90/91 Tue 7th Dec Atlantic 75 & D Class 23.20 F2 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of both lifeboats following a report from a fishing vessel that a red distress flare had been seen, thought to be coming from the Easthead area of Chichester Harbour. The lifeboats made a thorough  search of the Easthead area and the Thorney, Chichester, Itchenor and Emsworth channels. After an hour with nothing found the lifeboats were stood down and returned to the lifeboat station at 00.32.
88/89 Sat 20th Nov Atlantic 75 & D Class 16.05 & 16.10 F2 The lifeboats were launched to search for a small fishing boat with two people on board which was lost in poor visibility between Bracklesham Bay and the Nab Tower. The Selsey Tyne class lifeboat and the Coastguard's helicopter joined in the search. At around 17.30 the fishing boat was found by the Selsey lifeboat approx 4 miles east of Selsey Bill. The Selsey lifeboat escorted the fishing vessel to Hayling Island.
87 Sun 24th Oct Atlantic 75 12.55 F4 The lifeboat station received a report from someone on the beach that a windsurfer may have been in difficulty near the  West Pole Sands. The lifeboat was launched and searched the area for approximately 1 hour. When no one was found in difficulty and no one was reported missing  the search was called off and the lifeboat returned to station.
86 Sun 17th Oct Atlantic 75 18.31 F2 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a 7.2m yacht with 4 adults on board that had run aground on the East Pole Sands. The lifeboat towed the vessel off the sands to safety.
* Sun 3rd Oct Atlantic 75 18.10 crew assembled but launch cancelled

Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the Atlantic 75 lifeboat  to an abandoned speed boat near the West Pole sands at the entrance to Chichester Harbour. This craft was not a danger to shipping and on further investigation it was found that a Gosport and Fareham Rescue boat was about to arrive on scene. The lifeboat crew had assembled but the launch of the Atlantic 75 lifeboat was not required.

84/85 Sat 2nd Oct Atlantic 75 & D Class 10.50 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboats to a 36ft yacht which had run aground near the Chichester Bar Beacon. The yacht was anchored in breaking surf. A lifeboat crew member was transferred to the yacht to attach a tow line but the yacht had a jammed rudder which meant towing would be difficult. The 3 adults on the yacht, in danger of being washed overboard refused to leave their vessel and be transferred to the D Class lifeboat. A tow line was successfully attached to the yacht and the anchor line was cut. The lifeboat began to pull the yacht into deeper water but the jammed rudder and breaking sea made the whole operation very difficult. The violently pitching yacht caused the straining towline to break the fairlead and sever the line.  A commercial towing vessel, “Hayling Rescue” arrived on scene, and with the assistance of the lifeboat crew took the yacht alongside but was unable to make headway due to the yacht’s jammed rudder. The Atlantic 75 lifeboat was then secured on the opposite side of the yacht to “Hayling Rescue” and together they towed the stricken yacht to safety. During this operation one of the yacht’s crew sustained bruising and was sea sick and the lifeboat crew member on the yacht sustained a hand injury but he continued with his task before seeking medical attention.
83 Fri 1st Oct Atlantic 75   F5 Solent Coastguard had received a report that two small fishing vessel in Hayling Bay might be unaware that worsening sea and wind conditions were expected. Before the Atlantic 75 lifeboat returned to station it was tasked to check that the crew of the fishing boats were safe, not requiring assistance, and to warn the skippers that a strong wind was expected
81/82 Fri 1st Oct Atlantic 75 & D Class 18.52 F5 The lifeboats were launched to a yacht with 5 people on board that had run aground near the entrance to Chichester Harbour. The yacht was in breaking surf. Three lifeboat crew were put on board the stranded yacht and along with the yacht crew they managed to lean the yacht over so that it could be pulled into deeper water. The yacht was towed to a mooring at Hayling Island Sailing Club.
79/80 Tue 28th Sept Atlantic 75 & D Class 01.48 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of both lifeboats to assist in the search for a missing woman from the West Wittering area. The woman was thought  to be suicidal and may have had an excess of alcohol. The lifeboats searched for an hour along the shore line from East Bracklesham to Itchenor before the woman was found ashore. The lifeboats then returned to station at 02.55.
78 Sun 26th Sept Atlantic 75 17.30 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a capsized sailing dinghy off the beach in Bracklesham Bay. The lifeboat stood by until the person was safely ashore.
76/77 Sun 20th Sept Atlantic 75 & D Class 12.14 F3 Both boats were launched, at the request of Solent Coastguard, to search for an  8 year old boy missing near the water in the East Head area of Chichester harbour. After a search of the area, including putting lifeboat crew on the beach, the boy was found by the police in a local shop.
74/75 Sun 12th Sept Atlantic 75 & D Class 12.05 F6 Solent Coast guard requested the lifeboats to assist a two man canoe which was attempting to tow a dinghy that had broken equipment and was in difficulties near Sparkes Marina. It was too shallow for the lifeboat to tow the boats to the shore but the Atlantic lifeboat stood by until the casualties reached the shore safely.
73 Sat 11th Sept Atlantic 75 13.45 F6 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a sailing dinghy which had capsized near the entrance to Chichester Harbour and was being swept out to sea.

After a search of the area the lifeboats were stood down when a report was received that the man had been seen coming out of the sea.
70 Mon 6th Sept Atlantic 75 17.45 F6 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to rescue a 11 year old boy who was being blown out to sea in a rubber ring. The boy was trying to reach another rubber ring which had also blown out to sea. The lifeboat picked up the boy 150 yards from the beach near the Coastguard's station and returned him to the shore. The lifeboat crew then picked up the empty rubber ring.
* Sun 5th Sept Atlantic 75 & D Class 16.49 crew assembled - launches cancelled   Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboats to search for a missing person on West Wittering beach as there were fears that she may have been in the water. The crew assembled but the missing woman was found and the launches were cancelled. After 20 minutes it was decided to stand the lifeboat crew down.
* Wed 1st Sept Atlantic 75 & D Class 22.00 crew assembled - launches cancelled   Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboats to search for 2 people last seen at 15.00 in a laser dinghy. Before the lifeboats were launched the missing people were found.
68/69 Tue 31st Aug D Class first launch at 20.40, re-launched at 23.30 F3 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to a 19ft sailing boat which had run aground on the Winner Bank, half a mile NE of the lifeboat station. The lifeboat crew took the two people who were on board the sailing boat on to the lifeboat and took them back to the lifeboat station leaving an anchor out on the sailing boat. When the sailing boat refloated at around 23.30 the lifeboat crew took the skipper back to his boat in the lifeboat and then accompanied the sailing boat in to Sparkes Marina. One of the lifeboat shore crew took the other person from the sailing boat by road to the marina.
67 Mon 30 Aug Atlantic 75 still afloat F 4/5 Whilst still afloat with the incident below, the Atlantic B Class lifeboat was tasked by Solent Coastguard to a 32ft yacht aground on the East Winner Bank. The yacht, which had experienced engine trouble, was being towed by a rescue boat into Langstone Harbour. The tow boat pulled the yacht across the East Winner Bank where the yacht ran aground and the tow rope snapped. The rescue boat then left the stranded yacht. The Atlantic lifeboat was tasked to the casualty to check that the crew on board the yacht did not require medical assistance. The lifeboat was unable to pull the yacht off the bank.  The lifeboat crew set an anchor for the yacht and made sure that the skipper of the yacht was safe and well and he was happy to wait in his yacht until it floated on the rising tide.
65/66 Mon 30 Aug Atlantic 75 & D Class 15.25 F4/5 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboats to a 7.5 metre power boat with 3 people on board with engine failure and a possible fire. The lifeboat towed the yacht into Sparkes Marina.
63 Sun 29th Aug Atlantic 75 20.29 F6 Selsey RNLI lifeboat had gone to assist a 33ft yacht which had got into difficulties near the Pullar buoy. The yacht had been at sea for 49 hours, one of the crew felt seasick and the yacht could not make headway to windward due to a jammed lifting keel. The Selsey lifeboat was towing the vessel into Chichester Harbour. The Hayling Island lifeboat was launched to take over the tow so that the Selsey lifeboat could re-house. The Hayling lifeboat towed the yacht into Sparkes Marina.
61/62 Sun 29th Aug Atlantic 75 & D Class 14.18 F6 A 12 metre yacht with four people on board, one of whom was in a wheelchair,  was on passage from Chichester Marina to Osborne Bay but decided to return to Chichester Harbour when the conditions worsened. As they sailed back towards Chichester Harbour the yacht's steering jammed and when the crew started  the engine it overheated. The yacht anchored and Solent Coastguard was contacted by an anxious friend. Both lifeboats were launched. A lifeboat crew member was put on to the yacht and the Atlantic 75 set up a tow and recovered the yacht's anchor. The D Class lifeboat was used to clear the area as without steering the yacht tended to veer violently. The yacht was towed into Chichester Harbour and as they approached Sparkes Marina the lifeboat crew changed to an alongside stern tow so that the yacht could be positioned with its wheelchair access point alongside the pontoon. Both lifeboats then returned to station.

53/54 Sat 14th Aug Atlantic 75 & D Class 16.55 F4 A 20ft speed boat with six people on board was reported to be on fire 200 metres south of the lifeboat station. The lifeboats were launched as the six young men from the burning boat had jumped into the water.  After the lifeboat crew had established that all the six casualties were safely ashore, to prevent the vessel, which was still on fire, drifting into the harbour, with permission from the harbour patrol vessel, which was on scene, the senior helm on the Atlantic 75 lifeboat with great skill passed the burning vessel at close quarters and at high speed using the resulting wash to drive the speed boat close to the shore. The shore crew and the coastguards had already cleared the beach of the growing crowd of spectators. The wash partially extinguished the fire and a further pass completely extinguished the flames. When the burnt out vessel had drifted close to the shore and it was considered safe the lifeboat tractors were used to drag the burnt hull to a safe place on the beach. [pictures]
52 Sat 14th Aug Atlantic 75 02.35 F4 A 7m RIB with 3 people on board was returning to Chichester Harbour from Portsmouth. The passengers on the RIB reported to Solent Coastguard that they had damaged their propeller, the boat was taking on water and they were unsure of their position. A  nearby vessel had relayed a "Mayday" on their behalf but had been unable to get close to the dinghy due to the shallow water.  The lifeboat accompanied the inflatable toy dinghy and the two adult occupants back to shore.
47/48 Sun 1st Aug Atlantic 75 & D Class 19.55 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the lifeboats to conduct a search along the sea front for a jet ski that was reported missing. After searching for 15 minutes the lifeboats were stood down as the Coastguard reported that the jet had been found.
46 Sun 1st Aug Atlantic 75 16.35 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to rescue a small inflatable dinghy with one person on board that was reported to be in difficulty floating 1 nautical mile south of Hayling Island. The lifeboat crew searched for the casualty and at the same time the lifeboat crew advised a number of similar dinghies to move closer inshore because of the strong tide and an offshore wind. The dinghy in question was not located and Solent Coastguard decided that it had probably managed to get back to the beach. The lifeboat was stood down by Solent Coastguard and returned to station.
45 Sun 1st Aug Atlantic 75 15.34 F4 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat to assist a yacht that had run aground in the Emsworth Channel on a falling tide. Solent Coastguard had received a report of two people in the water following the capsize of a dinghy in the Thorney Channel. Solent CG requested the  immediate launch of the Atlantic 75 to assist. The Lifeboat proceeded at best speed to the Thorney Channel. Once on scene, the Chichester Harbour Patrol RIB had taken two ladies from a passing vessel that had picked them out of the water.  The lifeboat was asked by the coastguard to check that no medical attention was required. As non was needed the lifeboat returned to station after the lifeboat crew recovered the ladies possessions floating in the harbour in their “Grab Bag”.

40 Sat 17th July Atlantic 75 16.09 F5

The tide was two and a half hours into the ebb. A Dory with two people on board was leaving Chichester Harbour, returning to Bembridge IOW when, whilst crossing Chichester Bar, a rope went through a drain hole in the transom and around the propeller.   The skipper who had a bad hip and limited mobility could not remove it.  The vessel soon was swamped by the seas on the Bar, so he fired a red flare which was seen by a number of people.  The Coastguard requested the lifeboat to assist.  Once launched, the lifeboat proceeded to the casualty's last reported position and found Hayling Rescue and the Harbour Patrol on scene. The Lifeboat was asked to take the two adults now on board the Patrol Rib, ashore. The two adults were taken off by Lifeboat, the craft was taken in tow by Hayling Rescue and escorted into Harbour by the HM Patrol Craft.
