Stormy Stan travels in style

Posted 09.04.09

The RNLI’s Stormy Stan made a surprise visit to the Hayling Seaside Railway which was donating all its day’s fares to the Hayling Island Lifeboat Station.

To the delight of the children, Stormy Stan and local volunteer lifeboat crew joined passengers on the train journeys along the seafront on Tuesday 7th April. The children were given beach safety information and RNLI flags to wave as they went on  the 2 mile round trip.

The Hayling Seaside Railway, formerly know as the East Hayling Light Railway, holds three charity days a year. Bob Haddock, the train operator, said, “Everyone involved with the railway would like to give something back to the community and this is our opportunity for our volunteers to share our hobby with volunteers from local charities.”

Visitors also enjoyed a display of model lifeboats from the Southern Model Lifeboat Society and the local fire and rescue team brought along a fire tender to show the children. During the day, £289 was raised for the Hayling Island Lifeboat Station.

The railway, which normally operates at weekends and on Wednesdays, will be running trips daily throughout the Easter school holiday. For more information about Hayling Seaside Railway go to www.haylingseasiderailway.com
